Balcony terrorist!

A few times the last week, I've stepped out on my balcony and found various degrees of destruction among the pots. After I planted out the Echinops, someone had been there and dug through their bucket, ripping off some leaves and even pulling out two of the plants. I blamed the rooks or the magpies. I was wrong.

(This is after I replanted the Echinops)

When I looked out the kitchen window half an hour ago, I saw a blackbird sitting on the rail. "Look! Oh, how cu... OI!!!" I interrupted myself when the bastard bird started digging out compost all over the place. I opened the window and shouted, but what did the blackbird do? It jumped two pots away and continued digging. Among other things, it dug out all my thyme and scattered it all over the balcony.

I've always been a defender of birds (rooks and magpies especially), but today I had enough. All my little plants! I've tied pieces of white cloth all over tha balcony, and hopefully that will keep the little terrorist away.

The neighbours must think I'm a lunatic.

Is that a sign of surrender or to keep them away!!! Try hanging some old cds as an attempt to keep large birds away, at least till you think your plants can take a bit of punishment. You might get some free ones in computer shops, intro to internet use, and the like. Good luck. T.

Hi
I have an 8 year old who is autistic and loves all things sparkly and colourful so we also have old CDs and lots of windmills and other colourful plastic ornaments and it seems to keep the birds away.We live on the outskirts of a small city and we are near to woods so we have lots of big birds but they seem to stay away from our very tiny garden......with all the movement and colour in the garden they probably think we are mad and it is safer to stay away!!!!
